Topic: Math - Liquid Measurement

Grade Level: 3rd

Teacher: Heather Sullivan
Objective: To remember and be able to convert liquid measurement.
Curriculum Connections to Standards: Measurement and Geometry 3.4 and 3.5


Time: 1-2 math periods
Materials: paper, pencil, use of computers



Activate Prior Knowledge:
Discuss how to measure liquids and see what the students already know.
Vocabulary: cup, pint, quart, gallon

Direct Instruction:
Show and teach the measurement conversions (1 quart = 2 pints, etc.)
Give the students realia/ cartons of each measurement so they can see the difference.
Explain one way to remember the conversions is to have the “Gallon Bear.”


Guided Practice:
Have students draw the gallon bear on a piece of paper and write the conversions.
Introduce rubric (technology)


Independent Work:
Students work on the computers with a partner, using either Inspiration or AppleWorks Draw to create their own “Gallon Bear.” ( See example)



Conclusion:
Print out the “Gallon Bears” and glue them into their Math Journals.
