Topic: Endangered Animals Report
Grade Level: 5th

Objective:
Students research an endangered animal and create a written and technological
report.
Curriculum Connections to Standards:
Reading 5.4, Writing 5.5, Writing 5.6,Speaking and Listening 5.7
Time: 3 weeks
Materials: Books on various animals, rubric, template
for slide show and paragraphs, and computers with Appleworks and Internet access.
Software: AppleWorks 5.0, Microsoft Word. Teacher lesson
plan folder includes: animal report organizer, endangered animal list, example
animal report slide show, slide show directions, slide show template, technology
rubric.
Activate Prior Knowledge:
Discuss habitat, characteristics, endangered.
Discuss proper report writing techniques.
Discuss how to cite resources.
Direct Instruction:
Introduce rubric for the written report as well as the technology portion.
Students select their animal of choice from a list of endangered animals.
Guided Practice:
Guide the students through the steps of the slide show. The students write down
the steps, as well as, following the steps on the laptops with a partner.
Guide them through the written paragraph template.
Independent Work:
Students begin research on their own. They will be looking in books and writing
down the information that pertains to each paragraph prompt. When they are finished
with their first draft, they need to have 2 friends edit their work prior to
writing their final draft. Once the final draft has been turned in to the teacher,
the students may begin working on their slide show.
Conclusion:
Students present their slide show report to the class. The class completes a
rubric for each student presentation.

Home Activity Extension:
Students need to take their report home and read it to their parents. Also,
on exhibition night, the student will share their slide show with their family.
