Paragraph 1 gives a summary of the story.

1.Topic sentence introduces the main idea of the story.

2.Includes significant details in a summary of what you read with the plot, setting, conflict, point of view, and ending.

Paragraph 2 tells the theme of the story.

1.Write the theme of the story (the meaning or moral of a piece of literature).
2. Prove from the text how you know what you know about the theme.
3. Is the theme written or implied in the story?
4. Give a personal connection (if it works).

Paragraph 3 identifies the problem/conflict in the story.

1.How do you know this is the problem/conflict?
2.How is the problem/conflict resolved in the story?
3. Site the text to prove how you know this.

Paragraph 4 demonstrates contrasts in the story.

1.Contrast the actions, motives and appearances of characters in the story.
Motives: Loyalty, Selfishness, Conscientiousness
2.Discuss the importance of the contrasts in the story.

Paragraph 5 describes the Literary Device/s used in the story.

1.What is the function of the literary device (what is it used for or what is the purpose)?
2.What is the effect (what is does - how it effects/shapes the story)
3.Use examples from the story of imagery, metaphor, symbolism,exaggeration, or flashback.

Paragraph 6 evaluates the author.

1. Evaluate the author’s use of various techniques to influence readers’ perspectives.
