Monthly Garden Reports

The reports below are meant to provide a brief narrative of our monthly gardening experiences.

The garden is on a break right now while we let our soil, staff and resources regroup! Our Garden Steering Committee has been meeting monthly to discuss the use of our state garden improvement monies that were awarded in the fall, and we are planning our Winter, Spring and Summer planting and harvesting events. This year, we look forward to new community involvement from our Dad's Club and a newly formed student service group meeting weekly during lunch time. Check back at the end of January when we return from winter break, January 20th.

July 2007
The summer garden is producing well.  We have been having some trouble with aphids and our normal ant infestation.  We gave children bananas and after they ate them we took the banana peels and hung them in the bean vines.  Aphids don’t like the bananas and  will leave the area.  Read More...

May 2007

May was a busy month in the Rosa Parks Garden.  We built sign boards and Ms. Goss’s class made signs to put on them.  The plants and the different areas all have labels so that people coming to the garden can tell what is planted and where.  We have been teaching garden classes on Fridays and on top of that we were preparing for an open house "garden party" for teachers who are new to the outdoor classroom environment this year. April 2007

April marked the beginning of the transition from cool season crops to warm season crops.  The last of the peas gave out during the first week and we have begun to replace them with pole beans.  We have beefed up the support system and we have planted boxes 11 and 12. Read more ...

 March 2007

The Garden is really shaping up nicely.  We picked at least fifty pounds of  sugar snap peas and the vines are still producing.  The spinach that was affected by the cold weather in January has finally started to grow again.  We will lose a lot of plants but we will be able to salvage some.  Ms. Goss’ first graders planted corn seeds in Jiffy pots at the first of the month and the seedlings are thriving and ready to set out in the garden.  Read more ...

February 2007

February was a great month for the Garden.  The first planting of peas is mature and we have picked approximately 10 pounds so far.  The Cold weather in January slowed the growth of the bush peas and the Spinach but both seem to be surviving.  Based on a sampling of the children who spend time in the garden Read more ...
