Arts in Education
The City Heights Educational Collaborative invites interested business, community and neighborhood organizations to find out how donations of time and expertise can provide real opportunities for our students to participate in and experience music, theater, dance, and the visual arts. If you would like more information, please contact Midge Backensto, Associate Director of CHEC. 619-594-0564.
The CHEC supports activities and programs that identify and nurture the artistic instincts of our students within the four art disciplines: dance, music, theater and visual art. Arts education helps our students learn to identify, appreciate, and participate in the traditional and non-traditional art forms of their own culture, communities and the communities of others. As students imagine, create, and reflect, they are developing the verbal and non-verbal abilities necessary for life-long learning.
Art and The Real World
Education cannot happen just at school – it must go beyond the walls of the classroom. Attending events in the community exposes our children to the variety of artistic expression found in the City Heights and San Diego communities. We want each student to broaden their awareness of the role arts play in the real world and to take advantage of what our Mid City community and surrounding communities have to offer.
Students and teachers agree it's always great to hear from someone who's been "around the block" a bit to share about his or her experiences and provide authentic experiences. CHEC encourages professionals in each of the four art disciplines, dance, music, theater, and visual arts from the San Diego area to participate as active partners in visual or performing arts education within our collaborative schools. We look to our community to help enlighten our students about how the various art forms relate and connect within the five content standards:
A Work of Art in Progress
The matrix below provides a working organizer to identify needs and areas of strengths. The CHEC and SDUSD integrate a variety of grade-level-appropriate, meaningful, arts experiences, reflective of the VAPA standards and presented by trained, professional artists. The goal of CHEC is to enhance the current curriculum through the recruitment and active involvement of local arts volunteers and organizations and their resources.
