American School Counselor Association (ASCA)

CHEC school counselors follow the American School Counselor Association National Model (2005) framework for the development of the PreK-16 Curriculum Counseling Action Plan. Each school site customizes the framework to meet the unique data driven needs of their students and to assure that every student receives the program benefits of the comprehensive Action Plan. The plan focuses on what all students should be able to do in three domain areas:

  • academic development

  • career development

  • personal/social development

with an emphasis on academic success. School counselors provide classroom guidance curriculum lessons for every student based on the ASCA National Standards and intentional guidance for students who need additional support or intervention. Curriculum Planning

CHEC school counselors meet during the year to address how our school counseling program will be implemented throughout the Collaborative schools. The guidance curriculum component consists of a structured ACTION PLAN for each school to insure that all students are provided the knowledge and skills appropriate for their development level. Below are drafts of the Action Plans for 2008-2009.

Professional Development

Ongoing professional development activities were planned for the entire year during a two-day summer retreat. Activities include classroom guidance lessons, individual student planning, responsive services and system support through consultation and collaboration.

 

There are eight professional development days set aside for the 2008-2009 academic school year. School counselors collaborate with all members of the school community, building relationships and securing resources for every student within the Collaborative. These professional development days are uniquely scheduled to allow our school counselors access to critical quantitative and qualitative data to identify and remove barriers to learning and to advocate for high standards for student success.

 

What makes our School Counseling Program unique?

  • Ratios: Student to school counselor ratio is lower than norm.
  • SDSU Partnership: Two or three SDSU counseling students do their field work at each CHEC school site.

  • Great Support Teams: Our support team includes social workers, student advocates and case managers.

  • Discipline: City Heights Educational Collaborative supports the philosophy that school counselors are not responsible for front line discipline. Rather their focus is on providing prevention education and interventions (individual and group counseling) to support a positive learning environemnt and reduce the incidences of discipine.

  • Health Center: Each CHEC school has an onsite, fully staffed Health Center to adress health and social service needs.

  • A commitment to implementing the ASCA National Model and to use data to effect change

  • Research & Professional Development: Dr. Trish Hatch, SDSU, in ongoing partnership with CHEC

  • PreK-16 Coordination: Program supports College Avenue Compact initiative

  • Leadership: K-12 Administrators support our Action Plan calendar and benchmarks.
